Safety Tips
> Water and electricity is an extremely dangerous combination. Keep electronics like radios away from pools and hot tubs. Always look for overhead power lines when cleaning pools, sailing or fishing.
> Never install pools underneath or near power lines.
> Look up. Be aware of overhead power lines. Always look up for the location of power lines when carrying or setting up a ladder or using long metal tools like pruning poles or pool skimmers.
> Use caution when trimming trees. Before attempting any tree pruning, look for overhead power lines that may be near and/or hidden by the tree foliage. If there are any concerns with overhead power lines and trees on your property, contact Boone REMC prior to attempting any tree work.
> Be aware of overhead power lines when working on a roof. Never place yourself, tools, materials and/or equipment closer than 10 feet from any overhead power lines.
> Call before digging. If you are beginning an outdoor project where digging is required, make certain that you first determined the location of all underground utility lines before you dig. Call 811 to have the Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service locate the underground utility lines at your location.
> Inspect your home to make sure that you have GFCI power outlets installed in bathrooms, kitchens, or any other areas where water is present. GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. GFCI outlets constantly monitor the electricity flowing in a circuit. GFCIs can sense a ground fault (or electrocution) and will automatically shut the power off.
> Inspect power tools and electric lawn mowers for frayed power cords, broken plugs and cracked or broken housings. If the product is damaged, stop using it and have it repaired immediately. All tools should be unplugged when not in use and stored in dry areas.
> Do not plant vegetation or construct any permanent structures directly in front of pad mount transforners. Not only are there numerous underground facilities located by these devices, Boone REMC employees need safe access to work on these devices during unplanned outages and routine maintenance.
> Never use electrical equipment or power tools near a pool or other wet areas.
> Fly kites and model airplanes in open areas well away from power lines and substations.
