Smart Grid Project

Boone REMC is currently installing new, “smart grid” metering equipment throughout our service area.

When this project is complete, all electric meters will be replaced with new meters that have two-way communication capabilities.

Please make sure that we have access to your meter. Common obstacles include shrubbery, fencing, locked gates and pets.

When your meter is replaced, you will experience a brief power outage. The new meters will look similar to your existing meter.

Boone REMC will be working with HD Supply Company to complete this project. HD Supply employees will be carrying identification letters and using vehicles that are clearly marked.

We expect to have the new meters in place by the end of April. We will use wireless technology and our own electric lines to read the new meters.

Our new metering systems will also help us monitor our power lines and substations more efficiently. We will have more automated, real-time information at our fingertips that we can use to analyze our grid, perform system maintenance and respond to outages.

With our old metering systems, we were able to read meters remotely from vehicles, but we often had to send technicians into the field to read meters and gather data about our power lines and substations.

With the ability to remotely gather system information, we can provide more efficient customer service, reduce outage response time and reduce labor and fuel costs.
