Boone REMC was incorporated in April, 1936, by a group of citizens in Boone County who needed electricity at their homes and businesses located in unincorporated areas. Investor-owned utilities would not serve these people because it was not profitable. We were the first electric cooperative in the United States, funded by the Rural Electrification Administration to provide electricity to a rural location.
Although we utilized loans from the federal Rural Electrification Administration to begin operating in 1936, Boone REMC has paid off all government loans and now acquires all financing from private markets.
Boone REMC is a member of the Indiana Statewide Association of RECs, and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Boone REMC is a Touchstone Energy® Cooperative.
